Herons sting Yellowjackets, 3-1

GENEVA, N.Y.--The fifth-ranked William Smith College soccer team defeated No. 16 University of Rochester, 3-1, close out the regular season on a 13-game winning streak. Junior forward Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) scored two goals and junior midfielder Kristin Falzarano (Morristown/Morris Plains, N.J.) recorded two assists.

William Smith got out to a fast start earning a corner kick in the fourth minute. On the corner, Falzarano launched a shot off Yellowjacket sophomore goalie Sarah Malecki (Johnson City/Binghamton, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Elizabeth Dedrick (Horseheads/Erin, N.Y.) buried the rebound for a 1-0 lead. In the 35th minute, Perrigo scored the eventual game-winner, firing a shot off the far post and into the net to double the Heron lead.

In the second half the Yellowjackets turned up the pressure, outshooting William Smith 22-14. In the 73rd minute, Rochester first-year forward Portia Bridges (Denver East/Denver, Colo.) scored on a rebound off a shot by first-year forward Kristin Kelly (Sandia Prep/Albuquerque, N.M.) to cut the lead to 2-1. Perrigo put the game away two minutes later, heading in a cross from Falzarano.

In goal, senior Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.) made five saves for the win. Malecki finished with six stops for the Yellowjackets (12-4-0). The Herons (16-1-0) now await the NCAA selection show to see who and where they will play next.
