Perrigo lifts Herons past NYU in double overtime

The Herons soared over the 23rd-ranked Violets, 1-0 in double overtime.

September 7, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior forward Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) converted a corner kick in the 105th minute to lead fourth-ranked William Smith College past New York University 1-0 in double overtime in soccer action this afternoon. The Herons (2-1-0) take the Heron Cup title after defeating Oswego State 4-1 yesterday, while the 23rd-ranked Violets (1-3-0) drop their third consecutive game.

Neither team could really get going in the first half, with most of the play happening in the middle of the field. William Smith had the lone shot on goal when sophomore Steph Gridley (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) got in behind the defense but had her shot stopped by NYU goalie Alison Myers (Lakeside Upper School/Bellevue, Wash.).

Knotted at zero coming into the second half, both teams started to generate more scoring opportunities as the players battled fatigue. The Herons and Violets both had some good chances, but excellent play by the goalies and the backs kept the game at a scoreless tie through the first 90 minutes.

After a scoreless first overtime period the Herons took control from the beginning of the second overtime. Three minutes in Gridley took the ball to the top of the 18-yard box and laid it off to first-year Heather Phillip (Southern Cayuga/King Ferry, N.Y.) who had her shot blocked out for a corner kick by NYU’s Myers. Junior midfielder Debbie Minarick (Wayne Valley/Wayne, N.J.) stepped up to take the corner kick serving it to the near post where Phillip flicked it across the goal to a streaking Perrigo who fired it home for the golden goal.

First-year goalie Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Constota, N.Y.) had an excellent performance in the net, pulling in four saves. Myers also went the distance for the Violets, stopping three shots.

William Smith returns to action on Sept. 13, when it travels to Denison University. The game is schedule to kick off at 1 p.m.
