Perrigo comes through down the stretch again

Kristin Perrigo

October 11, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) netted her fifth game-winning goal of the season to guide William Smith past St. Lawrence 1-0 in overtime in UCAA women’s soccer action this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Herons are now 3-0-1 in overtime games this season.

William Smith (8-2-1, 5-0 UCAA) wasted no time getting into the attack this afternoon. The Herons put together a combination of passes off the kickoff, finding Perrigo open on the left side, but her shot sailed just over the crossbar. St. Lawrence (7-4-1, 2-2-1 UCAA) responded right away creating a couple dangerous attacks that were stymied by the William Smith defense. The Herons nearly grabbed the lead again in the 10th minute but could not put away a cross from the right flank. That would be the story for much of the first half as the two teams went into the break scoreless.

The second session proved to be much of the same as the Herons and Saints both fired five shots apiece but were unable to connect on any of them. William Smith had the first good opportunity of the half in the 53rd minute, but sophomore Laura Desobry’s (Walt Whitman/Bethesda, Md.) shot sailed over the net. The Saints had its most dangerous chance just under 20 minutes later when Nicole Lopez (AuSable Valley/Port Kent, N.Y.) fired her shot wide right. Scoreless after 90 minutes of regulation the two teams headed to overtime, the Herons’ fourth time of the season and St. Lawrence’s second in as many days.

Three minutes into the overtime period sophomore Steph Gridley (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) executed some nifty footwork to get by the defense, but was denied by keeper Carly Draper (Colonel By Secondary School/Ottawa, Ontario). The Herons continued to attack when in the 99th minute Perrigo collected a deflection off a defender and slotted the ball past Draper for the 1-0 victory.

Rookie goalie Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Conastota, N.Y.) went the distance, pulling in 6 saves, while Draper had four stops for the Saints.

William Smith hits the road on Oct. 14, for its next match against 17th-ranked Nazareth at 4 p.m.
