William Smith wins easily over Skidmore
October 25, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.Sophomore Steph Gridley (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) scored two goals in the opening seven minutes to lead William Smith College to a 5-0 win over visiting Skidmore in Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association soccer action this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The game marked the final regular season home contest for seniors Danielle Cornett (Potsdam/Potsdam, N.Y.), Stephanie Leveille (Ossining/Ossining, N.Y.), and Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.). In four seasons the trio has led the Herons to the NCAA Quarterfinals twice and the semifinal round in 2002, amassing a 59-15-6 record. William Smith (11-4-1, 6-1-1 UCAA) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Gridley took a Perrigo feed and knocked in a shot from the left corner of the box in just the fourth minute. Less than four minutes later, Gridley struck again getting her head on a ball that was bounced around in the six-yard box for her fifth goal of the season. Skidmore (5-7-1, 1-6-1 UCAA) responded with some solid attacks after falling behind early, but could not break through the tough William Smith defense. First-year Heather Phillip (Southern Cayuga/King Ferry, N.Y.) put the game out of reach in the 37th minute, taking a beautiful through ball from Alexandra Rieben (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.) and slotting it into the left corner of the Skidmore goal. Leading 3-0 coming out of the break, sophomore defender Seraphine Hamilton (The Peddie School/Trenton, N.J.) tallied her first career goal seven minutes into the second half with a shot over Kristin Alphins (Needham/Needham, Mass.) head for the 4-0 edge. Debbie Minarick (Wayne Valley/Wayne, N.J.) closed out the scoring five minutes later converting a penalty kick after Phillip was taken down by a Skidmore defender in the penalty area. Heron goalies Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Canastota, N.Y.), Liz Orofino (The Branson School/Mill Valley, Calif.), and Brittany Malchano (Pine-Richland/Gibsonia, Pa.) combined for the victory with one save, while Alphin made six stops for the Thoroughbreds. The Herons travel to Cortland for their final regular season game on Nov. 1, at 1 p.m. |
