Stachura, Cornwell earn UCAA weekly awards

October 21, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association has named senior forward Alyson Stachura (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) its Women’s Soccer Player of the Week and senior Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) its Goalie of the Week for their strong performances last week. Stachura scored both game-winning goals in the Herons victories over fifth-ranked Nazareth and 25th-ranked Rochester, while Cornwell recorded four and seven saves against the respective teams.

Leading 1-0 over Nazareth, Stachura scored William Smith’s next three goals, recording her first hat trick of the season, leading the Herons to a 4-1 victory. Her three goals against the Golden Flyers were one more than she had in her previous 12 games. Three days later Stachura netted both goals in William Smith’s 2-0 shutout of Rochester. Her seven goals and one assist for 15 points leads the Herons in 2002.

Cornwell made four saves and allowed just one goal in the Herons’ 4-1 win over Nazareth. A few days later, Cornwell made a few key saves against Rochester to record her sixth shutout of the year. For the week, she boasted a .917 save percentage and a .50 goals against average.

William Smith (9-2-3, 3-1-1 UCAA) returns to action on Oct. 22, when the Herons host RIT. The match is scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m.
