Warner lifts Herons over Hamilton in overtime
October 4, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.William Smith sophomore Kate Warner (Gould Academy/Gloucester, Mass.) headed in a corner kick 3:34 into overtime to lead the Herons to a 2-1 victory over Hamilton College in UCAA womens soccer action this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Herons are now 2-0-1 in overtime games this season. Coming into the second half after a scoreless first 45 minutes, the Herons wasted no time getting into their attack. Sophomore Steph Gridley (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) gave William Smith the 1-0 lead in the 47th minute by firing home the rebound after goalie Jen Munoz (Lawrenceville School/Old Bridge, N.J.) could not hold on to Seraphine Hamiltons (The Peddie Schoo/Trenton, N.J.) shot. Hamilton nearly tied the game less than 30 seconds later when Elizabeth Roberts (Holland Hall School/Tulsa, Okla.) shot was blocked just wide by a Heron defender. Heather Phillip (Southern Cayuga/King Ferry, N.Y.) almost made it a two-goal game in the 54th minute, but her header was cleared off the line by a Continental defender. Hamilton got one last chance with one minute left in regulation sending a long ball over the William Smith defense and forcing a Heron penalty in the box with 15 seconds left. Eileen Fisher (Skaneateles/Skaneateles, N.Y.) stepped up to the penalty spot and fired home the shot to tie the game. Headed into their third overtime match of the season, the Herons got into the attack immediately, forcing a corner kick just 30 seconds into the extra session. Two minutes later junior midfielder Debbie Minarick (Wayne Valley/Wayne, N.J.) stepped behind the ball for William Smiths 14th corner kick of the game and hit a perfectly flighted ball to the six-yard box where Warner headed home the game-winning goal. First-year keeper Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Conastota, N.Y.) went the distance, making five saves, while Hamilton goalie Jen Munoz (Lawrenceville School/Old Bridge, N.J.) had six stops. The Herons return to action on Oct. 10, taking on UCAA opponent Clarkson at 4 p.m., on Cozzens Field. |
