William Smith falls to Bombers 1-0

September 20, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College soccer team gave up a goal early in the first half on the way to a 1-0 loss to visiting Ithaca College this afternoon in women’s soccer action. Senior Becca Berry (Lowville/Lowville, N.Y.) led the Bombers to victory with her third goal of the season.

Falling to 3-2-1 on the season, the Herons came out of the gates strong, controlling the run of play in the opening 15 minutes. However, Ithaca (2-2-3) made the most of their first scoring chance when Berry collected a long ball from the midfield and slipped it into the right corner of the net in the 19th minute. William Smith nearly evened the score with less than three minutes remaining in the half when sophomore Kate Warner’s (Gould Academy/Gloucester, Mass.) header off a corner kick was headed off the line by an Ithaca defender.

The second half proved to be much of the same for the Herons as they were unable to capitalize on their chances. William Smith outshot the Bombers 11-6 for the game, including a 7-3 margin in the first half.

Rookie goalie Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Conastota, N.Y.) made two stops in 90 minutes of action, while Ithaca keeper Kurstin Meehan (Martha’s Vineyard Regional/Edgartown, Mass.) had six saves on the afternoon.

William Smith returns to action on Sept. 26, when it opens its conference schedule at Rensselaer at 4 p.m.
