William Smith soccer ranked sixth in preseason poll

August 23, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith soccer team will begin the 2002 season ranked sixth in the NSCAA/adidas preseason poll. The Herons are coming off of a 17-2-1 season that saw them reach the NCAA Quarterfinals before falling 1-0 to Amherst College. 2001 National Champion Ohio Wesleyan is atop the rankings with William Smith foe Amherst at second.

The Herons were ranked as high as fourth during the past season, before slipping to sixth in the final ranking. The graduation of five starters will be a challenge for William Smith, but there are players ready to step up and fill the shoes of their departed teammates. The Herons open the season on the road against a strong Mary Washington team on Aug. 31 at the Gettysburg Tournament.
