Herons capture 2nd straight Liberty League crown

CANTON, N.Y.--The William Smith College squash team won its second consecutive Liberty League Championship at the Robie Squash Center this afternoon. The Herons posted 9-0 victories over Hamilton and Vassar and dispatched host St. Lawrence 7-2 in a rematch of last season's battle for the top spot.

In the title match against the Saints (3-1), junior Shaila Pandole (Jai Hind College/Mumbai, India), first-year Lori Stump (Shady Academy/Pittsburgh, Pa.), and sophomore Lucy Ross (Springside/Philadelphia, Pa.) won 3-1 at Nos. 3-5, respectively. Sophomore Maddie Brooks (Westminster School/New Canaan, Conn.) won a thrilling five set match 9-6, 7-9, 1-9, 9-4, 9-4 at No. 6, while junior Serena Turner (The Taft School/Locust Valley, N.Y.), sophomore Emily Gailun (Westminster School/Longmeadow, Mass.), and first-year Katie Baker (Westminster School/Oyster Bay, N.Y.) cruised to 3-0 victories in the final three slots in the order.

William Smith (4-0) returns to action Dec. 3-4 when the Herons participate in the Wesleyan Tournament.
