CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--The William Smith squash team captured the Walker Cup with a 6-3 victory over Amherst today in the College Squash Association Team Championship. The win is William Smith's first cup victory at the CSA Team Championships, while the Herons 17th place overall finish is second only to the 2004-05 squad that placed 15th (7th in the Kurtz Cup).

The Herons defeated Mt. Holyoke (6-3) and Stanford (8-1) to advance to the Walker Cup final. William Smith relied on the strength of the bottom half of its lineup all weekend. Sophomore Lucy Ross (Springside School/Philadelphia, Pa.), junior Helen Grassi (Episcopal/Chevy Chase, Md.), sophomore Emily Gailun (Westminster School/Longmeadow, Mass.), first-year Katie Baker (Westminster School/Oyster Bay, N.Y.), and senior Lee Lee Robinson (St. Paul's School/East Norwich, N.Y.), No. 5 through No. 9, respectively, all went 3-0 this weekend. Ross extended her team-leading winning streak to seven consecutive matches.

William Smith completed the regular season with a 12-6 overall record, the second highest win total in the program's eight varsity seasons. The 2004-05 Herons were 15-5.
