Herons sweep Liberty League squash awards

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith squash team posted a 4-0 weekend and was rewarded with both of the Liberty League’s weekly awards. Sophomore Katie Hendricks (The Shipley School/Haverford, Pa.) and first-year Maddie Brooks (Westminster School/New Canaan, Conn.) were named the conference Performer and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Hendricks went 4-0 at No. 1 to lead the Herons to a 4-0 weekend at the Mount Holyoke Tournament. She began the weekend with a dominating 3-0 (2,0,2) win over Franklin & Marshall’s Jessie Mitchell. Later that afternoon, Hendricks toppled Conneticut College’s Ryan McManus 3-0 (1,2,6). On Sunday, she yielded just a single game in a win over Mt. Holyoke’s Nusrat Madraswala (1,4,(8),2). Hendricks completed her sweep by defeating Tufts’ Jules Avrutin 3-0 (3,8,0).
Brooks also went 4-0 playing in the No. 5 position. She began the weekend with a 3-0 (5,0,1) win over Franklin & Marshall’s Barbara Bee. Later that afternoon, Brooks toppled Conneticut College’s Allison Read 3-0 (0,0,5). On Sunday, she dropped Mt. Holyoke’s Maria Carriedo 3-0 (0,3,1). Brooks completed her sweep by defeating Tufts’ Liz Thye 3-0 (1,4,5).
William Smith dispatched Franklin & Marshall 7-2, Connecticut College 7-2, Mount Holyoke 8-1, and Tufts 5-4. Now in their seventh varsity season, the Herons have compiled a 13-2 overall record, the most wins in the program’s brief history. William Smith is back in action at 2 p.m., on Feb. 5, when Colgate visits the Smith Squash Center.
