GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College squash team closed out the 2004-05 season with a program-best 15th-place finish out of 29 teams at the annual Howe Cup hosted by Princeton University. Yale captured the overall title for the second consecutive year.

Qualifying for the Kurtz Cup, the B Division of the Howe Cup, for the first time in William Smith’s seven seasons, the 15th-seeded Herons dropped a 9-0 decision to No. 10 Cornell in the opening match.

William Smith turned around the next day to face the No. 14 Colby College, who lost to Amherst in its opening match. The Herons garnered victories at the top two spots and at No. 8 and No. 9, but were unable to earn that fifth victory, narrowly losing to the White Mules, 5-4.

Rebounding from a tough setback, William Smith downed No. 16 Tufts, 6-3, to earn 15th place overall and seventh in the Kurtz Cup.

Sophomore Katie Hendricks (The Shipley School/Haverford, Pa.) and senior Sarah Coffin (St. George’s School/Bryn Mawr, Pa.) both posted 2-1 records for the weekend, at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively.

Coffin finishes the year with a team-best record of 15-5, while Hendricks put together a 10-6 mark as the Herons’ top player all season.

The 2004-05 season saw William Smith capture its first Liberty League Squash Championship, establish a new mark for wins in a season with a 15-5 record, and set a new record for season winning percentage (.750).
