Ross, Baker earn Liberty League weekly praise

GENEVA, N.Y.—After leading the William Smith College squash team to the Walker Cup Championship, sophomore Lucy Ross (Springside School/Philadelphia, Pa.) and first-year Katie Baker (Westminster School/Oyster Bay, N.Y.) were honored by the Liberty League this afternoon. Ross was named the conference’s Co-Performer of the Week, while Baker was named the Co-Rookie of the Week.
Ross, playing at No. 5, won all three of her matches to lead the second-seeded Herons this weekend. She defeated Mount Holyoke’s Pia Seth 3-0 (9-0, 9-0, 9-1), Stanford’s Cate Crowley 3-0 (9-0, 9-0, 9-1), and Amherst’s Lauren Coape-Arnold 3-0 (9-6, 9-3, 9-7). Ross extended her team-leading winning streak to seven straight matches. She finished the season with an 11-1 record.
Baker, playing at No. 8, also won all three of her matches in William Smith’s title run. She defeated the Lyons’ Preema Pais 3-0 (9-0, 9-2, 9-0), the Cardinal’s Amy Eshelman 3-0 (9-5, 9-4, 9-2), and the Jeffs’ Margo Nathan 3-0 (9-1, 9-1, 9-2). Baker improved to 8-5 this season and a perfect 6-0 at No. 8.
The Walker Cup is the C Flight of the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championships. William Smith finished 17th in the CSA overall standings. The Herons completed their eighth varsity season with a 12-6 record, only the 2004-05 Herons finished with more wins (15) and a higher winning percentage (.750).
