2 Herons earn squash awards

GENEVA, N.Y.—Two William Smith College squash players were honored by the Liberty League this week. Junior Lucy Ross (Springside School/Philadelphia, Pa.) was named the Co-Performer of the Week, while first-year Katie Mullen (Sacred Heart/Rye, N.Y.) was tabbed the Rookie of the Week.
In a 3-0 weekend for the Herons, Ross won all three of her matches at No. 2. On Saturday, she defeated St. Lawrence’s Erin Lacy 3-0 (9-2, 9-0, 9-7) and Toronto’s Edith Chow 3-1 (9-2, 2-9, 9-5, 9-6) as the Herons defeated both teams 8-1. On Sunday, Ross knocked off Colgate’s Paige Bayless 3-0 (9-1, 9-0, 9-1) in a 7-2 William Smith win. The 3-0 weekend improved Ross’ career record to 17-7.
Mullen also went 3-0 playing at No. 7, helping the Herons extend their winning streak to four matches. She defeated the Saints’ Alyssa Smith 3-0 (9-0, 9-7, 9-0) and the Varsity Blues’ Leanne Notenboom 3-0 (9-2, 9-4, 9-0). Mullen knocked off the Raiders’ Annie Morrison 3-0 (9-1, 9-4, 9-3). The 3-0 weekend improved Mullen’s record to 11-4.
The 18th-ranked Herons (9-7) are back in action on Feb. 10, when they play No. 17 Tufts (7-10) and No. 10 Cornell (5-7) in Ithaca.
