GENEVA, N.Y.—Two William Smith College squash student-athletes were recognized by the Liberty League today. Senior Helen Grassi (Episcopal/Chevy Chase, Md.) was named the league’s Co-Performer of the Week, while first-year Sarah Hallberg (Tabor Academy/Mystic, Conn.) was tabbed Co-Rookie of the Week. Grassi and Hallberg played pivotal roles in four matches this past weekend, helping the Herons to a 3-1 record.
Grassi went 4-0 at No. 5, defeating Amherst’s Sarah Harper 3-1 (6-9, 9-3, 9-0, 9-3) and George Washington’s Maggie Alexander 3-0 (9-1, 9-0, 9-0) on Saturday, before going on to down Maddie Dufour 3-0 (9-3, 9-8, 10-9) from Colby and Laura Robertson of Connecticut College 3-0 (9-2, 9-3, 9-3) the following afternoon.
Hallberg went 3-0 for the weekend at No. 9. On Saturday, she defeated Amherst’s Laurel LaMontagne 3-0 (9-2, 9-5, 9-3) and won by default against George Washington, which only had eight players. She went on to knock off Colby’s Danille Stillman 3-0 (9-1, 9-2, 9-5) and Connecticut’s Danielle Coleman 3-0 (9-4, 9-6, 9-2) the next day.
William Smith defeated Amherst 5-4, George Washington 8-1, and Connecticut College 6-3, and fell to Colby 5-4, at the Mt. Holyoke Tournament over the weekend. The Herons (6-7) will host St. Lawrence and Toronto on Feb. 3 in the Smith Squash Center at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
