Heron squash aims to defend Walker Cup

February 15, 2007

CSA logoNEW HAVEN, Conn.—The William Smith squash team, the defending champions of the Walker Cup, will try to retain their status beginning on Feb. 16 as they face-off with No. 24 Virginia at Yale University. The Herons are ranked 17th in the nation and have earned the top seed in the Walker Cup bracket, the C Flight of the Howe Cup, the College Squash Association national championship.

William Smith returns six players from last year’s championship squad, senior Helen Grassi (Episcopal/Chevy Chase, Md.), junior Emily Gailun (Westminster School/Longmeadow, Mass.), junior Lucy Ross (Springfield School/Philadelphia, Pa.), junior Maddie Brooks (Westminster School/New Canaan, Conn.), sophomore Katie Baker (Westminster School/Oyster Bay, N.Y.), and sophomore Lori Stump (Shady Side Academy/Pittsburgh, Pa.).

The Herons (10-8) enter this weekend’s play winners of five of their past six matches. Senior Katie Hendricks (The Shipley School/Haverford, Pa.), who missed last season’s Walker Cup run while studying in Geneva Switzerland, plays at No. 1 for the Herons, sporting a 9-8 record. Baker leads the team with a record of 14-4, splitting time between No. 7 and No. 8.
