Herons capture another Walker Cup
February 18, 2007
NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The William Smith College squash team ended the 2006-07 season the same way they finished the 2005-06 season, by hoisting the Walker Cup. The Herons defeated Amherst College 6-3 at the Brady Squash Center this afternoon to bring home their second consecutive Walker Cup.
Junior Maddie Brooks (Westminster School/New Canaan, Conn.), sophomore Katie Baker (Westminster School/Oyster Bay, N.Y.), and first-year Katie Mullen (Sacred Heart/Rye, N.Y.) had a relatively easy time, winning 3-0 in the No. 7 through No. 9 positions, respectively. Mullen ended the season with the team's longest win streak, seven matches, and posted a 14-4 overall record.
William Smith had a much tougher time capturing its other three points in the match. Senior Shaila Pandole (Jai Hind College/Mumbai, India) won 9-5, 9-5, 1-9, 9-3 at No. 3, while sophomore Lori Stump (Shadyside/Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior Helen Grassi (Episcopal/Chevy Chase, Md.) went the distance at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Stump overcame a 2-1 deficit to win 9-5, 9-10, 2-9, 9-6, 9-3, while Grassi fell behind 2-0 before rallying for the victory, 7-9, 6-9, 10-8, 9-2, 9-1.
The Herons finished the season with a 13-8 record, ranked 17th in the nation. Amherst was ranked 18th.
