Two Herons earn Liberty League praise

GENEVA, N.Y.—Two William Smith College squash student-athletes were honored by the Liberty League today. Senior Shaila Pandole (Jai Hind College/Mumbai, India) and first-year Katie Mullen (Sacred Heart/Rye, N.Y.) were named the Liberty League Co-Performer of the Week and Co-Rookie of the Week, respectively, after leading the Herons to their second straight Walker Cup Championship over the weekend.
Playing at No. 3, Pandole closed out her collegiate career with three consecutive wins at the Walker Cup. On Friday, she rebounded from a 9-0 loss in the first game to defeat Virginia’s Magee Quick 3-1 (0-9, 9-4, 9-2, 9-7). In the semifinals, Pandole topped Vassar’s Amalia Sax Bolder 3-1 (6-9, 9-3, 9-1, 9-3), then went on to knock off Amherst’s Libby Martin 3-1 (9-5, 9-5, 1-9, 9-3) in the finals. Pandole completed her collegiate career with a 32-17 record.
Mullen wrapped up a spectacular rookie season on a seven-match win streak. At the Walker Cup, she defeated Virginia’s Nancy Chen 3-0 (9-0, 9-0, 9-5), Vassar’s Lilia Totevska 3-0 (9-1, 9-0, 9-1), and Amherst’s Laurel LaMontange 3-0 (9-1, 9-3, 9-1), all at No. 9. Mullen finished the season with a 14-4 record.
The Herons closed out the 2006-07 season with a 13-8 record.
