GENEVA, N.Y.—Seven members of the William Smith College swimming and diving team recently were selected to the Liberty League All-Academic team. Emily Block (Governor Dummer/Stratham, N.H.), Julia Brel (Simsburry/Simsburry, Conn.), Adrienne Brockway (Tenafly/Tenafly, N.J.), Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd Mercy/Ambler, Pa.), Kate Feller (Avon/Avon, N.Y.), Becky Grossman (Mercersburg Academy/Penfield, N.Y.), and Suzie Opalka (Academy of Notre Dame/Hollis, N.H.) were honored for their academic and athletic prowess.

Block primarily swims the breaststroke and freestyle for the Herons. In her sophomore season, she registered her best time of 1:09.19 in the 100-yard freestyle against Wells on Nov. 9. She is a double major in biology and economics.

A freestyler, Brel posted a season-best 2:16.20 in the 200 freestyle at the Liberty League Championships in December. She is majoring in psychology.

A junior education and English double major, Brockway chiefly swims the freestyle for the Herons. She accomplished a season-best time of 27.59 in the 50 freestyle at the Liberty League Championships.

A junior diver, Costanza is currently undefeated at home and has won eight out of 10 events this season. She won her second-straight Liberty League Championship on the 1-meter board, setting a school record of 398.90 for 11 dives. Costanza owns three William Smith records. She is studying architecture.

Feller rejoined the Herons’ swim team after studying abroad during the first semester. In her junior season, she posted a season-best of 26.71 in the 50 free at the RPI Invitation on Jan. 22. She is a double major in biology and environmental studies.

Grossman swims the butterfly and freestyle strokes for the Herons. She recently posted her best 100 butterfly result of the season (1:00.82) and 50 freestyle (25.63) against RIT on Jan. 18. Grossman was named Liberty League Co-Swimmer of the Week for performances against Ithaca and at the Skidmore Invitational. She is a chemistry and biology double major.

As a backstroker, Opalka achieved her best time of the season in the 200 backstroke (2:33.16) against Wells. She is a geoscience major.

Student-athletes from the Liberty League were selected to the team based on the following criteria: sophomore academic standing, at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, and on the team roster for the academic year.

The Herons return to action again on Feb. 16-19, at the NYSWCAA Championships at Nottingham High School in Syracuse, N.Y. Diving will be held on Feb. 16, at 6 p.m., while the swimming competition is Feb. 17-19, with the trials beginning at 10:30 a.m., and finals starting at 6:30 p.m.
