GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College junior diver Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd-Mercy/Ambler, Pa.) set a new pool and school record in the 3-meter diving competition as the Herons captured a season-opening victory over Buffalo State in Bristol Pool. The Herons outscored the Bengals 145-95.

Costanza won both diving events, capturing the 1-meter event with an NCAA qualifying score of 261.30 and the 3-meter event with a record-breaking score of 262.80. That eclipses her previous best of 261.20, established against Wells last season.

William Smith had three double winners as seniors Jenny Fowler (Westfield/Westfield, N.J.) and Becky Grossman (Mercersburg Academy/Penfield, N.Y.), and sophomore Charlotte McIntosh (Blair Academy/Reading, Pa.) turned in strong opening performances. Fowler won both the 200-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke, touching the wall n 2:07.69 and 1:17.32, respectively.

McIntosh dominated the field in the 100 backstroke, finishing nearly three seconds ahead of her closest competitor with a time of 1:05.92 and captured a second win in the 200 free (2:07.69).

Grossman captured an individual victory in the 100 fly with a time of 1:03.29 and led the 200 medley relay team of McIntosh and first-years Thea Engst (Christian Brothers Academy/Fabius, N.Y.) and Meredith Eppers (Orchard Park/Orchard Park, N.Y.) to victory in 2:00.52. Eppers also earned a victory in the 100 freestyle race, turning in a time of 57.89.

The Bengals’ Sara Weinert (Byron-Bergen/S. Byron, N.Y.) led Buffalo State with a first-place finish in the 1000 free with a time of 11:30 and led the 200 free relay team of Marie Ryer (Hutch Tech/Buffalo, N.Y.), Kari Pappert (Palmyra-Macedon/Macedon, N.Y.), and Susan Stiner (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls, N.Y.) to victory in 1:47.49.

William Smith is back in the pool on Nov. 9, hosting Wells in Bristol Pool at 7 p.m.
