GENEVA, N.Y.—The Liberty League office recently named William Smith College senior Becky Grossman (Mercersburg Academy/Penfield, N.Y.), junior Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd Mercy/Ambler, Pa.), and first-year Meghan Mosher (Livonia/Conesus, N.Y.) the Women’s Co-Swimmer, Co-Diver, and Co-Rookie of the Week, respectively.

Grossman, Costanza, and Mosher helped William Smith to a sixth place finish out of 15 teams at the NYSWCAA Championships this past weekend.

Grossman turned in an outstanding weekend of swimming, setting three individual school records, matching a fourth one, helping two relays establish records, and qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
A sprint specialist, Grossman started the meet with a bang anchoring the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team that set a school record with a time of 1:39.84. Later that same day, she captured the 50 freestyle, touching in with a record time of 24.46. That time also exceeded the NCAA “B” qualifying standard.

In the second day of competition, she helped the 200 medley relay team to a new school record of 1:53.64 in the preliminaries and a fifth place finish overall in the finals.

Grossman wrapped up the meet in style, matching the school record in the 100 free preliminaries (53.46) and grabbing runner-up finishes in the 100 fly and 100 free. Grossman also smashed a 20-year old record on Saturday by over two seconds in a time trial of the 100 fly with an NCAA “A” qualifying time of 57.71. Her 50 split of 26.97 in that race also set a new school record.

Mosher also was a member of the Herons’ two record-breaking relay teams and earned a pair of top-10 individual finishes. She swam a 25.03 second leg in the 200 free relay and went 24.91 as the anchor on the 200 medley relay team. Individually, Mosher took seventh in the 50 free with a personal best time of 25.28 and was 10th in the 100 free, touching the wall in 55.71.

Costanza continued to add to her long list of accolades, earning the Diver of the Meet award at the NYSWCAA Championships with a pair of runner-up finishes. Costanza scored 357.28 for runner-up honors on the 1-meter board and compiled 396.45 points in the 3-meter competition. She is undefeated in dual meets this year and has placed either first or second in all meets.

Surpassing the NCAA qualifying standard three times this season, she will find out on Feb. 25, if she is invited to compete in the NCAA Championship meet for the second consecutive year.

The NCAA sets “A” and “B” qualifying standards for the championship meet. Those athletes who exceed the “A” standard earn an automatic bid to nationals, while the “B” standard is a provisional qualifier. Each event is generally made up of around the top-20 athletes throughout the season.

To be selected to the NCAA Diving Championship, a diver must exceed the qualifying score twice during the season to be considered. The athlete then submits a tape of her dives to a selection committee that will select who it believes are the top 22 divers.

The 2005 NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships will be held at Hope College in Holland, Mich. on March 10-12.
