Herons fall at Buff State, 125-118; Costanza exceeds NCAA standard
November 5, 2005
BUFFALO, N.Y.--The William Smith swimming and diving team lost its season opener today, 125-118 at Buffalo State. Senior diver Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd Mercy/Ambler, Pa.) posted a score of 245.70 on the 1-meter board, exceeding the NCAA Championship standard by seven tenths.
A two-time NCAA Diving Championships participant, Costanza was the runner up on the both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, but her score in the former event bested the NCAA Championship standard. Unlike swimming where a student-athlete simply has post a time faster than the qualifying time, divers must exceed the qualifying standard twice in a dual meet (6 dives) or once during a championship meet (10 dives) and then submit a video tape of those qualifying performances to the selection committee for consideration.
First-year Lynn Cutter (St. Gertrude/Richmond, Va.) emerged from the pool a winner in all three events she entered for the Herons. She teamed with seniors Adrienne Brockway (New Hartford/Newhartford, N.Y.), Kate Feller (Avon/Avon, N.Y.), and sophomore Meghan Mosher (Livonia/Conesus, N.Y.) to win the 200 medley relay in 2:00.25. Cutter won the 50 free in 26.63, a tenth of a second ahead of Feller, and won the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.8, nearly four seconds in front of the runner up from Buff State.
William Smith also got individual wins from junior Charlotte McIntosh (Blair Academy/Reading, Pa.) in the 1,000 free (11:47.89), Feller in the 100 butterfly (1:08.15), Mosher in the 100 free (58.69), and Brockway in the 100 backstroke (1:11.09).
The Herons are back in the pool on Nov. 8, when they host Wells College at 7 p.m.
