Rochester slips past William Smith, 136-107

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith swimming and diving team lost to the visiting University of Rochester 136-107 tonight in Bristol Pool. The Herons held a slim three-point lead through the first nine events, but the Yellowjackets surged into the lead down the stretch.
Rochester was led by double winner sophomore Michele Gruen (Hamden Hall Country Day School/Hamden, Conn.). She captured the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:04.2 and the 200 butterfly in 2:23.73. Gruen also swam a leg on the Yellowjackets’ victorious 200 free relay.
William Smith had a pair of double winners. In the 50 free, senior Becky Grossman (Mercersburg Academy/Penfield, N.Y.) touched in more than a second ahead of teammate and runner up Jenny Fowler (Westfield/Westfield, N.J.) in 25.72 seconds. Grossman again prevailed by more than a second in the 100 free, turning in a time of 55.99 seconds. She also swam a leg on the victorious 400 medley relay team.
Junior diver Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd Mercy/Ambler, Pa.) was the Herons’ other double winner. For the second time in less than a week, she exceeded the NCAA Championship qualifying standard on the 1-meter board with a winning score of 248.2, while capturing the 3-meter event with a score of 254.35.
William Smith is back in the pool at 7 p.m., on Feb. 1, when the Ithaca Bombers visit Bristol Pool.
