William Smith swims past Wells, 106-83

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College swimming and diving team earned its second consecutive dual meet victory of the young season this evening with a 106-83 win over Wells College in Bristol Pool. First-year Meredith Eppers (Orchard Park/Orchard Park, N.Y.) grabbed a pair of individual victories to lead the way for the Herons.
Eppers captured her first win of the evening, outracing the competition in the 200-yard individual medley by three seconds with a time of 2:29.01. She followed that with a strong performance in the 500 freestyle race, touching the wall in 5:52.82.
Seniors Jenny Fowler (Westfield/Westfield, N.J.) and Becky Grossman (Mercersburg Academy/Penfield, N.Y.) and sophomore Charlotte McIntosh (Blair Academy/Reading, Pa.) also were double winners for William Smith.
Fowler edged first-year teammate Meghan Mosher (Livonia/Conesus, N.Y.) in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.71, just eight hundredths of a second faster than Mosher. She also helped the 400-free relay team of Mosher, McIntosh, and Eppers earn the fastest time of 3:57.60.
Grossman dominated the field in the 200 butterfly, beating the runner-up by nearly 12 seconds with a time of 2:23.96. She also turned in a strong third leg on the winning 400 medley relay team comprised of juniors Suzie Opalka (Academy of Notre Dame/Hollis, N.H.) and Charlotte Hoffman (Greenwich/Greenwich, Conn.), Grossman, and McIntosh.
Junior Liz Young (Arthurdale, W.Va.), senior Alice Globus (Port Byron, N.Y.), and first-year Erica Thomas (Albany, N.Y.) captured victories for the Express.
The Herons are back in the water on Nov. 13, traveling to Alfred for a 1 p.m., meet. The Saxons nipped William Smith last season 124-119.
