GENEVA, N.Y.—Five student-athletes on the William Smith College swimming and diving team were recently named to the 2005-06 Liberty League Women’s Swimming and Diving All-Academic Team. Seniors Adrienne Brockway (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.), Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd Mercy/Ambler, Pa.), Kate Feller (Avon/Avon, N.Y.), and Suzie Opalka (Academy of Notre Dame/Hollis, N.H.), and junior Emily Block (Governor Dummer/Stratham, N.H.) were honored for their efforts in the classroom and in the pool.

Brockway is a sprinter in the freestyle and backstroke disciplines. On Dec. 3 at the Liberty League Championships, she turned in season’s best times in the 100-yard freestyle (58.10), 100 backstroke (1:08.77), and the 200 individual medley (2:30.98). Brockway also was part of the victorious 200 medley relay team at Buffalo State, touching in at 2:00.25. A Dean’s List student in each of her first three years on campus, Brockway is double majoring in English and European studies.

William Smith’s first All-American diver, Costanza has continued to build her already impressive resume this season, exceeding the NCAA Championships qualifying standards in seven of the Herons’ nine meets. The three-time defending Liberty League champion on the 1-meter board holds all four of William Smith’s diving records, including the 1-meter championship (11 dives) mark which she set on Nov. 8, 2005, with a score of 407.15. Costanza is majoring in architecture and was also named to the 2004-05 Liberty League All-Academic team as well as the past two CSCAA All-Academic squads.

Feller, a freestyle and butterfly specialist, opened the season with consecutive wins in the 100 butterfly against Buffalo State and Wells. On Dec. 3, she registered her fastest time in the 50 free, 26.44. A double major in biology and environment studies, Feller was also named to the 2004-05 Liberty League All-Academic team. She has been named to the Dean’s List in each of the past three years and is a member of Hai Timiai, William Smith’s senior honor society.

A versatile swimmer, Opalka competes in a wide-range of events for the Herons. On Nov. 12, she posted season-low times in the 100 butterfly (1:11.75) and 100 backstroke (1:14.25) against Alfred. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest liberal arts honor society, Opalka has been named to the Dean’s List in each of the past three years and was also named to the 2004-05 Liberty League All-Academic team.

Block returned for the second half of the season after spending the first semester studying in Australia. She competes primarily in the freestyle sprints. The biology and economics double major was also named to the 2004-05 Liberty League All-Academic team and the 2004-05 Dean’s List.

To earn a place on the Liberty League All-Academic teams, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average and be at least a sophomore academically.

William Smith returns to the pool at 1 p.m. on Feb. 4, when the Herons compete in the Skidmore Invitational in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
