3 swimmers named to UCAA All-Academic team

February 4, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—Three William Smith College swimmers were named to the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic Team. Senior Elizabeth Aumand (Massena/Massena, N.Y.), junior Lisbeth Engst (Christian Brothers Academy/Fabius, N.Y.), and sophomore Becky Grossman (Mercersburg Academy/Penfield, N.Y.) were honored by the conference for excellence in the classroom and in the pool.

Aumand is a jack-of-all-trades for the Herons, having competed at distances from 50 yards to 500 yards in the breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle disciplines. She is a double major in English and psychology and has the highest cumulative grade point average on the team. Aumand was named to the UCAA All-Academic team last season.

A team co-captain, Engst is William Smith’s top swimmer in the breaststroke events. During the Skidmore Sprint Invitational on Feb. 1, she won both the 50 and the 100 breaststroke races. Engst is majoring in psychology.

A transfer from Bowdoin College, Grossman has made an instant impact in her first season with the Herons. William Smith’s top swimmer in the butterfly events, she has posted seven individual victories this season, and has been a member of three victorious relays.

Student-athletes from the conference schools were selected to the team based on the following criteria: sophomore academic standing, at least a 3.2 grade point average, and on the team roster for the academic year.

William Smith has an 8-1 record in dual meets this season, and finished fourth in the UCAA Championship Meet in December, the team’s best finish in that meet since the 1997-98 season. The Herons return to action this evening at 7 p.m., in a dual meet at Ithaca.
