5 Herons named to NYSWCAA All-Academic team
February 26, 2002 GENEVA, N.Y. Five members of the William Smith swimming and diving team were recently named to the New York State Womens Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic team. Seniors Kelly VanGorden (Palmyra-Macedon/Geneva, N.Y.), Melinda Fay (Hugh C. Williams/Canton, N.Y.), Shannon LeBeau (Jamesville-DeWitt/Jamesville, N.Y.), Marleah Tkacz (G.W. Fowler/Syracuse, N.Y.), and junior Elizabeth Aumand (Massena/Massena, N.Y.) earned spots on the squad during the NYSWCAA Championships this past weekend. All five Herons were also named to the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic team. A two-time All-American, VanGorden is majoring in psychology and sociology. She currently holds the school records for the 50-yard breaststroke, the 100 breaststroke, the 200 breaststroke, the 100 individual medley, and the 200 IM. She has qualified for the NCAA Championship meet in each of her four seasons and has swam four NCAA B cut times this season, including her state championship 100-yard breaststroke time of 1:06.67. Fay is the teams top diver and also swims in the freestyle sprint events. She is majoring in sociology. LeBeau is William Smiths top distance swimmer. She is majoring in economics and Asian language and culture. She was named to both the UCAA and NYSWCAA All-Academic teams last season. Tkacz swims backstroke and freestyle events for the Herons. She is an English major. She was also named to the 2001 NYSWCAA All-Academic Team. Aumand swims both butterfly and freestyle events for William Smith. She is an English and psychology major. She was also named to the 2001 NYSWCAA All-Academic Team. The athletes named to the team must have a minimum 3.3 grade-point-average from the previous two semesters and score in the NYSWCAA meet. First-year swimmers are ineligible for consideration. William Smith finished the regular season with a dual meet record of 6-4. The Herons closed out their schedule on Feb. 20-23 with a strong showing at the NYSWCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Syracuse.
