6 Herons named UCAA All-Academic

CAPE COD, Mass.—Six student-athletes from the William Smith College swimming and diving team were recently named to the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic Team. Senior Kelly VanGorden (Palmyra-Macedon/Geneva, N.Y.) headlined the group, earning her third straight spot on the team.
Seniors Melinda Fay (Hugh C. Williams/Canton, N.Y.), Shannon LeBeau (Jamesville-DeWitt/Jamesville, N.Y.), and Marleah Tkacz (G.W. Fowler/Syracuse, N.Y.), junior Elizabeth Aumand (Massena/Massena, N.Y.), and sophomore Lindsay Bellinger (Amsterdam/Amsterdam, N.Y.) also joined VanGorden on the squad.

To be named to the UCAA All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have at least sophomore athletics and academic standing, a minimum 3.2 grade point average, and be a significant contributor to their team.
A two-time All-American, VanGorden is majoring in psychology and sociology. She currently holds the school records for the 50-yard breaststroke, the 100 breaststroke, the 200 breaststroke, the 100 individual medley, and the 200 IM. She has qualified for the NCAA Championship meet in each of the last three seasons and has swam two NCAA “B” cut times this season.

Fay is the team’s top diver and also swims in the freestyle sprint events. She is majoring in sociology.

LeBeau is William Smith’s top distance swimmer. She is majoring in economics and Asian language and culture. She was named to both the UCAA and New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) All-Academic teams last season.

Tkacz swims backstroke and freestyle events for the Herons. She is an English major. She was also named to the 2001 NYSWCAA All-Academic Team.

Aumand swims both butterfly and freestyle events for William Smith. She is an English and psychology major. She was also named to the 2001 NYSWCAA All-Academic Team.

Bellinger is a multi-talented swimmer, performing in the individual medley, the butterfly, and both sprint and middle distance freestyle events. She will declare a major at the end of this semester.

William Smith finished the regular season with a dual meet record of 6-4. The Herons close out their schedule Feb. 20-23 at the NYSWCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Syracuse. The meet is the final opportunity for Herons to qualify for the NCAA Championship meet, March 14-16, in Oxford, Ohio.
