Costanza named ECAC Diver of the Week

February 11, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College sophomore Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd-Mercy/Ambler, Pa.) continues to reap awards after her record setting performance last week, earning the ECAC Division III Diver of the Week accolade. Costanza also was named the UCAA Diver of the Week.

In the 1-meter diving competition in a dual meet with Ithaca College, Costanza easily broke the record for six dives with a winning score of 272.35. Elizabeth Breer ’90 held the old record, 266.10, set in 1987. Costanza’s score is her second of the season that exceeds the NCAA Championship qualifying standard. William Smith will submit a video tape of her two performances to be reviewed by an NCAA selection committee.

Costanza has been consistent all season on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, taking the top spot in 12 of the 14 competitions. She also holds the 3-meter record for six dives, 261.10, set on Nov. 21, against Wells.

The Herons return to the pool Feb. 18-21, in the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. Hosted by Nazareth College, the event will be held at Webster High School. The diving competition commences on Feb. 18, at 6 p.m., while swimming will kick off the following day at 10:30 a.m.
