Costanza, McIntosh collect UCAA hardware

Sarah Costanza '06

February 9, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith swimming and diving team collected two of the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association’s three weekly awards. Sophomore Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd Mercy/Ambler, Pa.) and first-year Charlotte McIntosh (Blair Academy/Reading, Pa.) were named the UCAA Diver and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

In the 1-meter diving competition in a dual meet with Ithaca, Costanza easily surpassed the school record for six dives with a victorious score of 272.35. Elizabeth Breer ’90 held the old record, 266.10, set in 1987. Costanza’s score is her second this season that exceeds the NCAA Championship qualifying standard. William Smith will now submit video tape of both performances to be reviewed by the NCAA selection committee.

Against the Bombers, McIntosh won the 200-yard freestyle in a season’s best time of 2:04.92, nearly a full second ahead of the runner-up. The victory came just two events after she helped the Herons to a first place finish in the 200 medley relay with a winning time of 1:57.55, nearly a full second ahead of the runner-up team. McIntosh also placed second in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.22.

The Herons return to the pool Feb. 18-21, in the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. Hosted by Nazareth College, the event will be held at Webster High School.
