Costanza breaks 3-meter diving record January 21, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.-- The William Smith College swimming and diving team rolled past RIT 134-98 tonight in Bristol Pool. In a team effort the Herons won eight out of 10 events. First-year Sarah Costanza (Gwyneed Mercy/Ambler, Pa.) led the way for the Herons, breaking the 3-meter school and pool record with a score of 251.85. The previous mark was 243.85 held by Lesley Mattson '00. Costanza also won the 1-meter diving event. Other double winners were first-year Kate Feller (Avon/Avon, N.Y.) and sophomore Becky Grossman (Mercersburg Academy/Penfield, N.Y.). Feller captured the 50-yard freestyle and 100 free races, while Grossman won the 100 butterfly and 200 medley relay, along with first-year Robin Coggins (Rumson-Fair Haven/Rumson, N.J.), sophomore Jenny Fowler (Westfield/Westfield, N.J.), and junior Lisbeth Engst (Christian Brothers Academy/Fabius, N.Y.). Also winning their events for the Herons were first-years Suzie Opalka (Academy of Notre Dame/Hollis, N.H.), and Charlotte Hoffman (Greenwich/Greenwich, Conn.) who captured the 100 backstroke and 500 free, respectively. The Herons return to action at Bristol Pool on Jan. 29, at 7p.m., against the University of Rochester. |
