February 20, 2004

WEBSTER, N.Y.—William Smith sophomore Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd Mercy/Ambler, Pa.) won the 1-meter diving title on the first day of the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Championship meet at Webster High School yesterday. The Herons completed the first of three days of competition in fourth place with 242 points in the 15-team event.

Costanza posted a career-best score of 372.0 for 10 dives on the 1-meter board, just a shade under the William Smith record of 380.4 set by Lisa Fasolo ’99 on Jan. 25, 1997.

The Herons also had a strong showing in the 50-yard freestyle. Sophomore Kate Feller (Avon/Avon, N.Y.) and junior Jenny Fowler (Westfield/Westfield, N.J.) both reached the finals. Feller had a third place showing in a time of 25.41 seconds, while Fowler took eighth in 25.67.

Both William Smith relays earned a spot in the finals. The 200 free team of junior Becky Grossman (Mercersburg Academy/Penfield, N.Y.), first-year Charlotte McIntosh (Blair Academy/Reading, Pa.), Fowler, and Feller took third place in a time of 1:41.63, while the 400 medley team of senior Lisbeth Engst (Christian Brothers Academy/Fabius, N.Y.), McIntosh, Grossman, and Fowler turned in a sixth place finish in 4:13.33.

Hosted by Nazareth College, the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Meet continues today with preliminary races beginning at 10:30 a.m., and the finals starting at 6:30 p.m.
