Costanza named RACA Athlete of the Year

Sarah Costanza '06

April 14, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College sophomore Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd Mercy/Ambler, Pa.) was named the Rochester Area College Athletics Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Year after her record-setting second season.

Costanza became the Herons’ first diver to capture any kind of All-American honors after she finished 13th on the 1-meter board at the NCAA Championships to earn honorable mention All-American recognition. She finished 17th in the 3-meter competition the following day.

Following her record-breaking rookie year, Costanza has continued her quick rise to the top this season, breaking two more records and capturing a pair of 1-meter titles.

In December, she won the 1-meter competition at the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Championship meet and collected co-Diver of the Meet honors with a third place finish on the 3-meter board.

In the final competition of the regular season, Costanza repeated her 1-meter performance in the New York State Championship meet. She also eclipsed her own school record of 390.96 for 11 dives in the 3-meter board twice. Costanza earned a season-high score of 398.00 in the preliminary round and finished third overall with a score of 391.20.

Costanza owns the William Smith records on both boards for six dives and the 3-meter mark for 11 dives.
