Grossman reaches NCAA qualifying standard

Becky Grossman

February 25, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College junior Becky Grossman (Mercersburg Academy/Penfield, N.Y.) reached the NCAA “B” qualifying standard in the 100-yard butterfly this past weekend at the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships.

Grossman closed out the 2003-04 season with a bang, turning in season-best performances in both the 100 and 200 butterfly races. She touched in at 1:00.08 for fourth place in the 100 fly, two-tenths of a second under the NCAA’s qualifying standard and just over two-tenths from breaking the record of 59.80 set by Kathy Bloom ’85 in 1985. Grossman earned another fourth-place finish in the final day of competition, completing the 200 butterfly in 2:15.32.

She also helped lead the 200 free relay team to third place with a time of 1:41.63 at the State Championships. A freestyle and butterfly specialist, she also eclipsed her previous best time of the year in the 50 free, touching the wall in 26.03.

Over the course of the season Grossman has captured six top individual finishes and five first-place spots in relays.

Those swimmers who reach the “A” qualifying standard earn automatic berths to the NCAA Championships on March 11-13, in St. Louis, Mo., while Grossman will find out on Feb. 27, whether her time is fastest enough among those who have met the “B” standard.
