November 20, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College swimming and diving team soundly defeated Wells College this evening in Bristol Poll. The Herons captured first place in eight of the meet’s first nine events en route to the 116-79 victory.

Sophomores Becky Grossman (Mercersburg Academy/Penfield, N.Y.) and Jenny Fowler (Westfield/Westfield, N.J.) were both double winners for William Smith. Grossman captured the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly, while Fowler won the 200 individual medley and the 500 free.

First-year diver Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd Mercy/Ambler, Pa.), the UCAA Diver of the Week, narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Championship meet in the 1-meter competition. She earned a score of 241.9 for six dives, four points shy of the NCAA qualifying minimum.

The Herons return to action on Dec. 6-7, in the UCAA Championship Meet, hosted by the University of Rochester.
