Records fall in Herons 138-104 setback to Ithaca

Sarah Costanza '06

February4, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith swimming and diving team dropped a 138-104 dual meet decision to visiting Ithaca, but sophomore Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd Mercy/Ambler, Pa.) turned in a record-setting performance on the 1-meter board, then watched as Ithaca senior Kristen Shorette (Monson/Monson, Mass.) topped her pool record on the 3-meter board.

In the 1-meter competition, Costanza easily surpassed the previous benchmark for six dives with a score of 272.35. Elizabeth Breer ’90 held the old record, 266.10, set in 1987. Costanza’s score is her second this season that exceeds the NCAA Championship qualifying standard. William Smith will now submit video tape of both performances to be reviewed by the NCAA selection committee.

Shorette was second in the 1-meter competition with a score of 264.25. Five events later, Shorette produced a six-dive winning score of 258.85 on the 3-meter board, besting Costanza’s pool record of 251.85. Costanza did not compete in the 3-meter event.

The flow of the meet favored the Herons in the early going, as they captured victories in five of the first seven events, but the veteran-laden Bombers were simply too deep, capturing the final six events of the meet. No swimmer for either team produced more than one individual victory.
