Saxon swimmers sneak past Herons, 124-119

November 15, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Alfred University swimming and diving team eked out a 124-119 victory over William Smith College this afternoon at Bristol Pool. The result was a reversal of last season’s result when the Herons snuck past the Saxons, 122-116.

Sophomore diver Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd Mercy/Ambler, Pa.) won both diving events for William Smith, capturing the 1-meter event with a score of 243.75 and the 3-meter event with a score of 249.55, just 2.3 shy of her school record. The Herons also notched victories in the 50-yard freestyle behind sophomore Kate Feller’s (Avon/Avon, N.Y.) 26.10, and in the 200 free relay. Juniors Jenny Fowler (Westfield/Westfield, N.J.) and Becky Grossman (Mercersburg Academy/Penfield, N.Y.), sophomore Adrienne Brockway (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.), and Feller won the meet’s final event in a time of 1:45.41.

The Saxons had three double winners: senior Sara Thompson (Batavia/Batavia, N.Y.), sophomore Rachel Saroka (Groton/Groton, N.Y.), and first-year Zara Racz (Morristown/Morristown, N.J.). Thompson captured the 100 breaststroke and the 100 butterfly, Saroka won the 200 individual medley and the 100 free, and Racz was victorious in the 200 free and the 500 free.

The Herons are back in the pool on Nov. 21, when they host Wells College at 7 p.m.
