William Smith swimming victorious

ALFRED, N.Y.—The William Smith College swimming team emerged from the water victorious this afternoon in a tri-meet with Alfred and Canisius. The Herons defeated Alfred 122-116, while disposing of Canisius by a score of 128-105.

In the first meet of the afternoon William Smith first-year diver Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd Mercy/Ambler, Pa.) beat out four other divers to win the 1 meter competition. Her score of 217.50 was 53 points better than her closest competitor. Costanza repeated that performance again in the 3 meter competition, scoring 218.30 points.

The Herons also received winning performances from Becky Grossman (Mercersburg Academy/Penfield, N.Y.) and Jenny Fowler (Westfield/Westfield, N.J.). Grossman garnered the top spot in the 200 free and 200 butterfly, touching in a 2:04.89 and 2:24.32, respectively. Fowler’s victories came in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle races, with the respective times of 26.14 and 57.22.

Matching up against Canisius later that afternoon, William Smith brought home two winning swims and two more strong diving performances. Once again, Costanza swept the 1 and 3 meter diving competitions, scoring 217.50 and 218.30 points, respectively. Charlotte Hoffman (Greenwich/Greenwich, Conn.)touched the wall first in 11:49.49 in the 1000 meter freestyle race. She swam her way to another victory in the 500 meter freestyle race with a time of 5:40.27.

William Smith hits the water again when they host Wells on Nov. 20. The first gun is scheduled to go off at 7 p.m.
