July 22 , 2005
GENEVA, N.Y.—Two William Smith tennis players recently were named to the 2004-05 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team. Senior Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.) and first-year Erinn Cain (Palmyra-Macedon/Palmyra, N.Y.) were recognized for their outstanding efforts in the classroom and on the tennis courts.
Maier played in 22 singles matches and 25 doubles matches this season. She compiled a 13-9 mark between second and fourth singles, while recording a 15-10 mark at No. 2 doubles, ending the season with five straight wins, including the B Flight Doubles Championship in the William Smith Tournament. At the annual Heron Awards Banquet, she received the Elizabeth Laird Redway Heia ’84 Tennis Coach’s Award as the team’s most inspirational player. Maier finished her career with a 66-21 singles record and a 46-27 doubles mark, while serving as a team captain. She graduated from William Smith in May with bachelor’s degrees in art history and art in education.
Cain saw her role on the team expand as the season progressed. She ended the year with a 6-2 singles record at No. 6 that included a six-match win streak.
To be named to the ITA All-Academic Team, student-athletes must be a varsity letterwinner and have a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the academic year.
