Herons drop narrow decision in season opener

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College tennis team captured four of the six singles matches, but were unable to get past visiting Cortland as the Herons dropped their season opener, 5-4, to the Red Dragons this evening at the HWS Tennis Center. Cortland improves to 4-1 overall, while the Herons fall to 0-1.
Dropping all three doubles matches, William Smith first-year Tara Ware (Avon/Avon, Conn.) grabbed the Herons’ first win, rallying after a first-set loss to beat Amanda Husson (Middletown/Middletown, N.Y.) 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the third spot. Senior Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.) downed Meredith McCaslin (Babylon/Babylon, N.Y.) 6-2, 6-3 in fourth singles, while first-year Katie Campbell (Winchester/Winchester, Mass.) breezed past Jen Hemedinger (Chenango Forks/Binghamton, N.Y.) 6-1-6-2 for her first career victory at the fifth position.
Rounding out the Heron lineup, sophomore Meghan Kelley (Norwell/Norwell, Mass.) battled through a long three-set match to win 6-4, 5-7, 15-13, over Stephanie Reynolds (Johnson City/Johnson City, N.Y.)
William Smith returns to action on Sept. 19, hosting Brockport at 1 p.m., at the HWS Tennis Center.
