GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College tennis team captured four of the six singles matches, but were unable to get past visiting Cortland as the Herons dropped their season opener, 5-4, to the Red Dragons this evening at the HWS Tennis Center. Cortland improves to 4-1 overall, while the Herons fall to 0-1.

Dropping all three doubles matches, William Smith first-year Tara Ware (Avon/Avon, Conn.) grabbed the Herons’ first win, rallying after a first-set loss to beat Amanda Husson (Middletown/Middletown, N.Y.) 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the third spot. Senior Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.) downed Meredith McCaslin (Babylon/Babylon, N.Y.) 6-2, 6-3 in fourth singles, while first-year Katie Campbell (Winchester/Winchester, Mass.) breezed past Jen Hemedinger (Chenango Forks/Binghamton, N.Y.) 6-1-6-2 for her first career victory at the fifth position.

Rounding out the Heron lineup, sophomore Meghan Kelley (Norwell/Norwell, Mass.) battled through a long three-set match to win 6-4, 5-7, 15-13, over Stephanie Reynolds (Johnson City/Johnson City, N.Y.)

William Smith returns to action on Sept. 19, hosting Brockport at 1 p.m., at the HWS Tennis Center.
