Herons match record with 9-0 win over Brockport

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College tennis team breezed past visiting Brockport State, 9-0, this evening at Bristol Field House, matching the program record for wins in a season with 14. Finishing the 2004-05 season with a 14-5 overall mark, Head Coach Chip Fishback has guided the Herons to their third 14-win season in four years.
William Smith senior Molly Patterson (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and first-year Tara Ware (Avon/Avon, Conn.) both captured their team-leading 14th singles victories on the year. Playing in the top spot, Patterson dropped Ashley Balling 6-4, 6-1, while Ware handed Jamie McDonald an 8-0 loss at No. 3.
Also turning in dominant singles performances for the Herons were senior Sarah Coffin (St. George’s School/Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and first-year Cory Turner (Canterbury School/Ridgefield, Conn.) with matching 6-1, 6-0 victories at the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
The Herons swept the doubles action, dropping just four games to the Golden Eagles.
William Smith returns to action on April 23-24, hosting seven teams at the annual William Smith Tournament.
