GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College seniors Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.) and Crystal Cordes (Mountain View/Mesa, Ariz.) closed out their tennis career in style, capturing the B flight doubles title at the annual William Smith Tournament on April 23-24. The Herons also picked up runner-up honors in three other draws, as William Smith was represented in four of the six championship matches.

Senior Molly Patterson (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) also finished her career with a strong showing, taking second in the A flight singles draw, while first-year Tara Ware (Avon/Avon, Conn.) lost in the title match in B singles.

In C flight doubles action, first-years Katie Campbell (Winchester/Winchester, Mass.) and Cory Turner (Canterbury School/Ridgefield, Conn.) also garnered second place.

Breezing through their first match, 8-1, against the pair from Geneseo, Cordes and Maier toppled the No. 1 seeded duo of Courtney Ellis and Liz Kelly from St. Lawrence, 8-4, to land a spot in the championship tilt against second-seeded Alex Goldberg and Jennifer Larson of SUNY New Paltz. Cordes and Maier posted one more upset, winning 8-4 to take home the trophy.

In the C flight, Campbell and Turner downed Ithaca’s doubles pair 8-2 in the opening round and disposed of Maggie Fenton and Laura Thomas of New Paltz 9-7 in the semifinals. In the finals Meg Terrien and Candice Vallejos of St. Lawrence handed the Herons an 8-6 loss to take top honors.

Turner also had a strong weekend at singles, advancing to the semifinal match in the C flight.

In A flight doubles, St. Lawrence’s No. 2 seed Kirsten Lannon and Anne Moulin defeated Kerry Farrell and Eri Yamakawa of New Paltz, 8-6, for the championship.

In singles action, second-seeded Patterson cruised through her first two matches and upended Cortland’s Amanda Husson, 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals to face off with top-seeded Laurie Dorscheid of Cortland in the championship match. Dorscheid proved to be too much for Patterson, earning the 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Ware provided the fans with good tennis in the B flight draw, dropping her first two opponents 8-5, 8-2, respectively to advance to the semifinals. Seeded second, Ware battled through a tight three-set match with No. 3 seed Courtney Ellis of St. Lawrence, winning 4-6, 6-4, 7-6. Featuring No. 1 versus No. 2 in the title game, Ware grabbed the first set 6-4, but Cortland’s Ashley Abar won the next two for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 title clinching win.

In the C flight singles draw, the Saints’ Terrien defeated the Hawks’ Larson 6-3, 6-0 to earn her second title of the day.

The Herons’ doubles pair of Patterson and Ware also advanced to the semifinals in the A flight, losing to the eventual champion, 8-4.

William Smith closes out the 2004-05 season with a 14-5 mark, matching the program-record for wins in a season for the third time in the past four years.
