William Smith tennis finishes season at NYSWCAA Championships

Senior Laura Maier advanced to the
semifinals of the NYSWCAA Championships this past weekend.

ITHACA, N.Y.-This past weekend the campus of Cornell University was the host for the 2004 NYSWCAA Women’s Tennis Championships. The William Smith Herons took sixth place out of 16 schools with 22 points. Vassar College won the event with 62 points.

In first singles senior Molly Patterson (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) reached the quarterfinals after beating Alicia Ballard of Alfred University 6-2, 6-7(5), 11-9 in the first round. Playing fourth singles senior Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.) advanced to the semifinals. She upset the No. 3 seed Florine Cannelle of Rensselaer in the opening match, 3-6, 6-3, 11-9, and then breezed into the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the quarterfinals.

In fifth singles first-year Katie Campbell (Winchester/Winchester, Mass.) upset third-seeded Meg Terrien of St. Lawrence University her first match of the weekend, 3-6, 7-6(4), 11-9. She then won her quarterfinal match 6-3, 6-2 over Liz Zimmerli of Nazareth College to reach the semifinals. In sixth singles sophomore Meghan Kelly (Norwell/Norwell, Mass.) also reached the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Robin Chu of Vassar College. Kelly won her first round match 6-0, 4-6, 10-1 and her quarterfinal match 6-2, 6-4 before playing Chu in the semifinals.

Patterson and junior Karen Newbury (Maine-Endwell/Johnson City, N.Y.) also turned in strong weekends in doubles action, advancing to the semifinals in first doubles. They won their first round match 8-4 and then upset the No. 3 seed from Skidmore College 8-5. In third doubles the team of Campbell and first-year Tara Ware (Avon/Avon, Conn.) were seeded third in their draw. Winning their first round match over a team from Nazareth College, 8-3, they breezed through their quarterfinal match 8-0 before being upset by a pair from New York University in the semifinals, 8-5.

The Herons finish the fall with a 7-4 record overall and finished fourth in the Liberty League Championships. The Herons will be in action again on March 14, when they will play Nebraska Wesleyan in Hilton Head, S.C. at noon, to kick off their spring season.
