GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith tennis players senior Molly Patterson (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and junior Karen Newbury (Maine-Endwell/Johnson City, N.Y.) recently were honored by the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association. Patterson was named second-team All-NYSWCAA singles, while the tandem of Patterson and Newbury earned second-team All-NYSWCAA doubles honors.

The Herons' top singles player in each of the past two seasons, Patterson posted a 17-9 record this year and finished her career at 62-31. This marks the third consecutive year the she has earned All-NYSWCAA second-team honors, in addition to back-to-back All-Liberty League selections. Patterson has also won the Rochester Area College Athletics Women’s Tennis Player of the Year award in each of the past two seasons.

As a doubles team in the fall, Patterson and Newbury, who spent the spring semester in the College’s study abroad program in Bath, England, posted a 9-7 record in the No. 1 position. They reached the semifinals of the NYSWCAA First Doubles Flight, before falling 9-8 (7-4). Over the past three seasons, Patterson-Newbury combined for a 25-16 doubles record.

The duo led the 2004-05 William Smith tennis team to a fourth place finish in the Liberty League Tournament and a sixth place showing in the NYSWCAA Tournament. The Herons finished the year with a 14-5 record, matching the program’s high-water mark for wins in a season. It is the third time in Patterson’s four-year career that William Smith has posted a 14-win season.
