GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College tennis team captured its fifth consecutive victory this afternoon, downing visiting St. John Fisher College, 8-1, at the HWS Tennis Center. The Herons improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Cardinals fall to 6-3 overall.

William Smith got off to a good start, winning two of the three doubles matches. Partners Crystal Cordes (Mountain View/Mesa, Ariz.) and Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.) won 8-2 at the second spot, while Katie Campbell (Winchester/Winchester, Mass.) and Tara Ware (Avon/Avon, Conn.) earned an 8-2 victory in the No. 3 slot.

The Herons kept that momentum going, securing straight set victories in all six singles matches. Senior Molly Patterson (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) dispatched her opponent 6-1, 6-4 in the top spot while Karen Newbury (Maine-Endwell/Johnson City, N.Y.) breezed by 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2.

Ware and Maier dominated their opponents as they lost just a combined four games in four sets, with 6-2, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0 scores, respectively. Campbell improved to a team-best 5-1 overall with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5, while Meghan Kelley (Norwell/Norwell, Mass.) had the toughest singles match of the afternoon in a 6-3, 7-5 triumph.

The Cardinals’ pair of Megan Peters and Katie Griffin grabbed St. John Fisher’s lone point of the afternoon with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.

William Smith returns to action on Oct. 5, traveling to Hamilton for a Liberty League match at 4 p.m.
