Maier nets Liberty League praise

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College tennis team breezed by visiting Rochester Institute of Technology, 9-0, this evening in a non-conference match at the HWS Tennis Center. The Herons did not drop a single set, improving to 7-4 for the season.
William Smith dominated doubles play, dropping just one game in the three matches for a 3-0 lead. In singles action sophomore Meghan Kelley (Norwell/Norwell, Mass.) flew past her opponent in the sixth spot with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Senior Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.) and first-year Katie Campbell (Winchester/Winchester, Mass.) also turned in impressive outings with 6-1, 6-2, and 6-3, 6-2 wins at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Junior Karen Newbury (Maine-Endwell/Johnson City, N.Y.) finished next for the Herons, dispatching Leigh Bryson 6-4, 6-1, while first-year Tara Ware (Avon/Avon, Conn.) scored a 6-0, 6-3 victory in the third position.
Senior Molly Patterson (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) closed out the match, battling through a tough first set to win 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1.
William Smith returns to action on Oct. 15-17, at the NYSWCAA Championships at Cornell University. The Herons finished 5th of 16 teams in 2003.
