William Smith tennis blanks Brockport

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College tennis team blanked visiting Brockport State this afternoon 9-0, at the HWS Tennis Center to improve to 1-1 overall. The Herons won all but one of their matches in straight sets to drop the Golden Eagles to 1-7 overall.
Seniors Crystal Cordes (Mountain View/Mesa, Ariz.) and Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.) sailed past their opponents in the No. 2 doubles spot with an 8-0 win. Posting identical 8-2 victories were senior Molly Patterson (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and junior Karen Newbury (Maine-Endwell/Johnson City, N.Y.) in first singles and partners Katie Campbell (Winchester/Winchester, Mass.) and Tara Ware (Avon/Avon, Conn.) in the third position.
In singles play, Patterson, Ware, Maier, Campbell, and sophomore Meghan Kelley (Norwell/Norwell, Mass.) all won their respective matches in straight sets. The final victory of the day came at No. 2 singles as Newbury battled through a tough three-set match that included two tiebreakers to down Kayla Mizgala (Westmoreland Central/Westmoreland, N.Y.) 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (2-7), 13-11.
William Smith returns to the court again on Sept. 22, traveling to Geneseo State for a 3:30 p.m., match.
