Herons win 2 titles at William Smith Tournament

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College sophomore Katie Campbell (Winchester/Winchester, Mass.) captured the C flight singles title at the annual William Smith Tennis Tournament on April 22-23. The Herons also claimed the C flight doubles crown, as sophomore Erinn Cain (Pal-Mac/Palmyra, N.Y.) and junior Meghan Kelley (Norwell/Norwell, Mass.) won convincingly. William Smith was represented in five of the six finals.

Due to consistent rain on Saturday, all singles play used pro set scoring as the day’s action was moved into the Bristol Field House.

Campbell advanced to the championship round of the 16-player draw after overpowering Ithaca’s Katie Dempsey 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals. She continued her dominant play in the finals, dispatching New Paltz’s Jodie Brenner 6-3, 6-0.

After breezing through the opening round, Cain and Kelley ousted Ithaca’s Rachel Gunderson and Natalie Jenereski 8-5 to advance to the finals. Facing New Paltz’s Lindsay and Ashley Trifilette, Cain and Kelley turned in an impressive 8-3 victory, including taking the final five games. Cain and Kelley posted a perfect season at No. 3 doubles, registering a 9-0 mark.

First-year Chelsea Rauck (Columbus School for Girls/Bexley, Ohio) also capped off a successful season with a second place showing the in A flight singles. Ranked fifth in the latest collegiate regional rankings, Rauck posted a 25-5 overall record.

Kelley also enjoyed a strong weekend in singles competition, advancing to the championship round of the B flight draw. In a well played final, she lost to Ithaca’s Gunderson, 6-2, 7-5.

In the A flight doubles draw, sophomore Tara Ware (Avon/Avon, Conn.) and Rauck cruised through their opening match 8-1 over a pair from Ithaca. Ware and Rauck edged out Cortland’s Amanda Husson and Andrea Terbush, 7-5, to advance to the finals, where New Paltz’s Eri Yamakawa and Lim won 8-6.

In B flight doubles, New Paltz’s Katherine Ketigian and Jennifer Larson whitewashed Cortland’s Meg Cole and Meredith McCaslin 8-0.

William Smith closes out the 2005-06 season with a 13-6 mark, one win shy of the program record for most wins in a season, most recently matched by the 2004-05 squad.
