GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith tennis team finished fifth this afternoon in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Tennis Tournament with a 5-2 victory over Hamilton College. Top-seeded Vassar College defended its conference championship.

The Herons (7-3) captured the top two doubles matches to carry a 2-1 lead into singles play. From there, juniors Molly Patterson (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.), and sophomore Kristin Dowling (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia, N.Y.) secured first, third, and sixth singles, respectively, in straight sets to ice the match.

The singles victory improved Maier’s record to 11-1 this season, including 10-0 in dual matches. The Herons’ captain is unbeaten in her last seven singles matches, the longest active streak on the team.

On Saturday, William Smith, the tournament’s fourth seed, lost its opening round match to No. 5 Union, 5-4, but rebounded to defeat Rensselaer, 6-3.

The Herons close out their fall schedule at the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Championships, Oct. 26-28.
