Ithaca tops Herons 8-1 in tennis March 25, 2004 GENEVA, N.Y.--Playing without two of its top three singles players, the William Smith tennis team lost to visiting Ithaca 8-1 in the Bristol Field House this evening. The loss drops the Herons to 9-5, while the Bombers improve to 10-7. Ithaca swept the doubles play and posted straight set victories at first, fourth, fifth, and sixth singles. The Bombers' Narguess Arjomand survived sophomore Kristin Dowling (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia, N.Y.) in the only three set decision of the match (6-2, 4-6, 10-4). Sophomore Karen Newbury (Maine-Endwell/Johnson City, N.Y.) posted the lone victory for William Smith defeating Jen Beekman at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1. The Herons were without the services of two of their top three singles players from the fall, juniors Molly Patterson (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.). The pair were a combined 24-5 in singles play during the fall. Both players are studying abroad this semester. William Smith will look to get back in the win column at 11 a.m., on March 27, when Nazareth College visits Geneva. |
